Had a very good lesson with top-set year 7. We built on the research they did last week into dictators and revolution by beginning to read ‘Animal Farm’.

Starter consisted of thinking about animals, their qualities and what social role they would have as humans. Effective in getting them to think about personification.

Read first chapter with the class. All pupils seemed engaged and some took part in reading aloud. Questioned the group at particular points (What social status does Major have? What was Major’s speech about?). Pupils linked well, when prompted, the ideas of revolution and dictators to the story’s premise.

Possible starter next week: look back over chapter – descriptions of the animals/characters: what were their qualities, identify key words, what will their character be like?

Pupils then had 15 minutes to read independently. All pupils were engaged in reading of some form.
